Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif Makes Winning Olympic Debut

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif makes winning Olympic debut

Khelif, a highly decorated boxer, was previously disqualified due to health issues

The Algerian Olympic Committee stated that Khelif was disqualified due to high testosterone levels.

Imane Khelif, a decorated boxer from Algeria, made a successful Olympic debut after her opponent Angela Carini of Italy withdrew from their match after only 46 seconds.

Khelif, a former world champion, was disqualified from the World Championships in 2022 due to medical reasons. It was later revealed that the reason for the disqualification was high testosterone levels, which raised concerns about her eligibility to compete in women's boxing.

Despite the controversy, Khelif was cleared to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics and her victory on Thursday is likely to reignite the debate about her eligibility.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been reviewing its policies on transgender athletes, with a focus on ensuring fair competition. The IOC has not yet released any new guidelines, but the issue is expected to be discussed further in the lead-up to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
