Mercer Absent From Training Camp Roster as Camp Opens

Jets Safety Marcus Maye Enters Camp on Physically Unable to Perform List

The New York Jets safeties Marcus Maye and Lamarcus Joyner miss practice for the start of training camp.

The New York Jets have opened training camp without safety Marcus Maye, who is on the physically unable to perform list with an undisclosed injury.

Coach Robert Saleh said he does not know how long Maye will be out but added that he is "day-to-day." Saleh also said that safety Lamarcus Joyner, who is also on the PUP list, would not practice on Wednesday.

The Jets have been hit hard by injuries in the secondary this offseason. In addition to Maye and Joyner, cornerback Bryce Hall is also on the PUP list with a torn ACL, and cornerback Blessuan Austin is out indefinitely with a broken foot.

The injuries in the secondary have forced the Jets to shuffle their lineup. Ashtyn Davis, who started 10 games last season, is now the No. 1 strong safety. Will Parks, who was signed as a free agent in the offseason, is the No. 1 free safety.

The Jets are hoping to get Maye and Joyner back on the field as soon as possible. Maye is a key part of the Jets' defense, and Joyner is a veteran who can provide leadership and experience to the young secondary.

In May, Maye underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder. The surgery was successful. Maye has been rehabbing ever since, and he was expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

It is unclear what caused Joyner to miss practice on Wednesday. Joyner has a history of injuries. He missed most of the 2020 season with a hamstring injury.

The Jets are hoping that the injuries to Maye and Joyner are not serious. The Jets are counting on both players to be key contributors on defense this season.
