Minnesota United FC Eliminates Sporting Kansas City from Playoff Contention
Loons Advance to Western Conference Semifinals
SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota United FC defeated Sporting Kansas City 2-0 on Sunday night at Allianz Field to advance to the Western Conference Semifinals of the 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs.
Emanuel Reynoso opened the scoring for the Loons in the 35th minute with a blistering shot from outside the box. Luis Amarilla doubled the lead in the 55th minute with a header off a cross from Reynoso.
Sporting KC had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the first half when Johnny Russell was awarded a penalty kick. However, Russell's shot was saved by Dayne St. Clair.
The win was Minnesota United's first-ever playoff victory and the first time they have advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals.
Loons Dominate From Start to Finish
Minnesota United came out of the gates flying and never let up. They controlled possession for much of the match and created numerous scoring chances.
Sporting Kansas City struggled to keep up with the Loons' pace and intensity. The visitors had a few good chances, but they were unable to capitalize.
Reynoso and Amarilla Shine
Reynoso and Amarilla were the stars of the show for Minnesota United. Reynoso scored a magnificent goal and assisted on Amarilla's header.
Amarilla was a constant threat in the air and caused problems for the Sporting KC defense all night long.
St. Clair's Heroics
St. Clair was called upon to make several big saves throughout the match, including a penalty kick save in the first half.
The Canadian goalkeeper was a major reason why Minnesota United was able to keep a clean sheet.
What's Next?
Minnesota United will face FC Dallas in the Western Conference Semifinals. The first leg will be played at Allianz Field on Oct. 23, and the second leg will be played at Toyota Stadium on Oct. 30.
